Have you noticed your dog chewing or biting his paws, scratching at his ears, or vigorously shaking their head? Although this is common, it can also be a sign that a yeast infection has set in.

How to spot a Yeast Infection

Several apparent signs can be observed to indicate whether your dog might have a yeast infection. These include …

    • Continuous chewing or licking the paws.
    • Crusty, flaky skin on the paws.
    • Dark rust-red hairs growing between the toes.
    • Diarrhea
    • Ear problems.
    • Head shaking.
    • Inflamed or swollen nail beds.
    • Seasonal allergies.
    • Speckles on the belly
    • Swelling of the affected area.

Knowing what these signs could mean is essential so that you can act early to remedy the condition. Delaying treatment will only complicate the condition and make it more challenging to resolve.

Indeed, your dog showing two or more of the above signs would be a strong sign that treatment is due.

Natural Remedies

There are a few things you can do at home to help your dog if it has a yeast infection:

1. Coconut Oil

At least one time per week, you should massage your dog around the yeast infected areas. Use the following coconut massage oil method:

    • Melt 8oz of extra virgin coconut oil in a glass bottle.
    • To the coconut oil, add two drops of lemon essential oil and ten drops of lavender oil.
    • Shake the mixture vigorously.
    • Massage the mixture into the affected area of your dog’s skin.

Whatever is left of the mixture, store it in a cool, dry place, and it should remain good for several months.

2. Keeping Your Dog’s Paws Clean and Dry

Yeast infection in a dog paws is very common. It is natural for your dog to get dirty paws as they love to get stuck into some pretty filthy places. So, it is not unexpected that they will routinely come into contact with yeasts. What you can do is to wash your dog’s paws in return for a walk or outdoor play.

There is also the option of getting your dog fitted out with a set of booties to keep their paws clean.

3. Use a Special Shampoo

Your vet might prescribe some special shampoo to help treat your dog’s condition. Conventional shampoos are not suitable for your dog’s coat. If they have a particularly oily or greasy coat, then a shampoo containing selenium sulfide or benzoyl peroxides will be required.

Anti-fungal shampoos with concentrations of chlorhexidine, miconazole, or ketoconazole may also be recommended to treat the infection.

These are not instant remedies and will take some time to take effect. When applying the shampoo, you should massage it into the coat and leave it for ten minutes before rinsing out.

Repeating this every three to five days for anything from 2 weeks to three months should show positive results.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another effective remedy is apple cider vinegar. Here is how to use it on your dog:

    • Put some apple cider vinegar into a squeezable bottle.
    • Squeeze the vinegar into your dog’s coat and massage it into the body. The idea behind this is that it helps to promote your dog’s pH level and stem the growth of yeast.
    • It is best to apply the vinegar after your dog has had a bath or swim, so the coat is still damp.

4. Green Tea

    1. Bring 8oz of water to the boil.
    2. Add two bags of green tea.
    3. Steep the tea for two to three minutes, then leave to cool.
    4. Use a syringe or a sponge to apply the tea to the affected ear canal.
